This is a piece I did in felt a couple of years ago as a study for a larger piece I did of a hunter proudly displaying his successful kill of three deer. I had to re-do the face several times to get the proportions right and I liked the way this face came out. It was "too hot" to work for the piece but I like it on its own on my wall.

  1. Colby. "deers"? Come on, man. :)

I like what I see of the work, however. You should post a pic of the larger piece.

  2. Oh, and BTW...might I mention I have loved me some Colby Keller since I first saw you years ago on Sean Cody. Glad to have found your blog!

If you're into photographic art, check out the International Center of Photography ( at 6th and 42nd while you're in NYC. It's one of my favorite museums in the city.

  3. well, ifound these deers on the internets! ;) thanks. i've not been - great recommendation as i'm here for a week.

  4. Since you posted this portrait I've been coming back to look at it. I think it's a really great piece. The almost cubist use of colour is brilliant. I don't know if you used a model, a picture, or if it came out of your imagination, but it looks like a this could be a man one could walk into in real life. It's easy to imagine this rugged, weathered--not withered--man doing his daily chores in a farm perhaps, the muscular body that a barn life develops, the big and calloused hands, the firm legs... I could go on describing the images this painting evokes in me, but it would quickly degenerate into porn, and that was not the point of my comment. ;-)

Well done! I hope you post more of your work soon.

  5. deers/stags is very reminiscent of gerhard richter.
