TO CUT OR NOT TO CUT...COLBY'S HAIR

In anticipation of the the second anniversary of Big Shoe Diaries, we are re-posting some classic moments from BSD History.  This post, about Colby's long hair/short hair decision, roused one of the more commented  on posts on the blog.  People had some SERIOUS opinions.

I'll be in NYC this weekend and I've got an appointment with my uber-cute friend of Colby stylist (who would make an excellent choice for some Mustachioed Men posts as you can see in the photo) and I'm in a pickle about my hair.

A studio that wants to work with me in the spring has asked that I get my hair buzzed because they want to do a military-theme and they need me to look the part. However, it doesn't pay extraordinarily well, and it seems like a huge investment of time would be lost [in growing out my hair] for a such a small salary. Granted, I figure most people would be worried about the low pay for porn, but I'm much more concerned about the hair decision.

It seems like a point of contention in the porn world and a generally divided issue in terms of masculinity and homo-erotic desire. For every comment or critical blog post I get about how silly my hair looks, I get an equally strong comment from fans who love my longer hair. So, what should I do? I've got 'til Saturday to decide...

  2. The truth is, porn or no you are better off cultivating your own cult of personality than morphing yourself to fit into other boxes and thereby becoming a less identifiable property. It's just like the artworld. There are a million people who can paint like Odd Nerdrum, but there is only one Odd. Were he to take a break to do Coke ads for magazines it would diminish his identity. If they want you in a military piece (and are not paying big money of course)- then have the other guy be the unnamed MP and you can be the poor guy at the other end of the nightstick. But I think you are beginning the transcendence to finding your own artistic identity, and any subjugation of your personality fights against your own body of work and what makes you unique. (That said, I bet you'd look great in a choppy high and tight). ;)

  3. Long hair works for you. It's this, along with your personality that initially made me interested in your work. Shaved head = mirror image of thousands of anonymous porn dudes. Keep it real

  4. Summer is coming and shorter hair will be cooler, it is easier to maintain, and it you can grow it back out again if you don't like it. Plus you could theoretically increase your fan base with a new look thereby increasing your demand for future roles in other productions with other companies. Changing it up every now and then can be fun.

  5. colby:
    1. its your signature. unique, distinctive

    2. its dramatic, accentuates all your moves

    3. its a new dimension: hair grabbing, messing up, shampoo i hope

    4. underwater possibilities

    what does jake cruise say?

if you do get it cut, pleas tape the session, including shampoo...it will sell...

  6. Dear Colby,

If I were you, since the production company isn't paying big bucks for this military role, I would ask for a compromise -- something shorter than what you have now, but not the buzz cut. Not all military men have buzz cuts anymore -- unless this role is supposed to be a brand new enlistee!

Length of hair, to me, is an individual thing -- what works for one stud may not work for another. I think your current hair style looks great on you, but I've seen you with shorter hair and I thought you looked very good then, also! (Honestly, I don't think you could look bad.)

As someone pointed out above, you can always grow it out again!

Hope all our comments help you!

    Fondly,

    Randal in Kansas City

  7. As a long time fan who has seen you through many looks, I have to say that you're current mop is super sexy. If you like it long and the next project is not paying you handsomely, then keep rockin the locks (and the glasses).

But still come visit NYC! Are you making any appearances while in town?

  8. keep your hair. :)

  9. Listen, Samson, its going to grow back, it is summer. The beach, the heat, the time, the product, the shower drain - you will appreciate the short hair. Shave it, video it, sell it. We can make tiny voodoo dolls. PS I am bald!

  10. I'd say any hairstyle that doesn't get in the way of your face. Your face is so stunning that I prefer to see it unencumbered.

  11. I think you need to ask for more money if they want you to buzz your hair. If they can't give you better pay, then don't do the job.

A compromise would be to get a stylish cut that conveys a military look, as others above have said.

  12. Options for my favorite internet artist/pornstar/blogger:

    1. Consider using a cover/helmet to hide your hair.

    2. Consider a spin on the military thing. Be a foreign military officer - where facial hair and everything is cool.

    3. Compromise by shaving the sides and keeping it long on top, and make one of the world's longest fohawks.

    4. Flip a coin to make the decision.

    5. Challenge another person to Naked Kombat. If you win, you can keep your hair. And if you want to keep your hair, you should challenge me. (It was worth a try...)

You'll look great regardless, but I do miss your fohawk from your RandyBlue days.

  13. I found myself in NYC last weekend during a massive rain and wind storm, crazy but fun, and got my hair cut. NYC is the best place in the world to get your hair cut. With that, I've followed you a while and like short hair better on you, just my preference.

Do what's in your heart. =*/

  14. I love your hair the way it is, but you will still be beautiful either way

  15. I'm a fan of the longer hair and I love the glasses. Makes you seem more like an ordinary guy than a porn star. A really beautiful ordinary guy indeed, but still real and adorable.

  16. Maybe they could incorporate a sexy hair cutting scene in the movie...

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think you should absolutely keep it if cutting it makes you uncomfortable. But then again, hair grows back. Either way, you'll still be the same handsome Colby. :]

  19. colby i feel really strongly about this..your hair is totally hot...my experience with guys with long hair is, they cut it off intending to grow it back.

    They never do !

  20. Look what happened to Samson.

  21. I love colby's hair long. If he has to cut it,

    1. can somebody record teh cut for a dvd?

    2. can we have a couple of HD closeups of his face covered by hair? See how long it is? I bet it curls under his chin by now

    3. Save the locks. I'd pay for a nice hunk of Colby's hair !

  23. Ultimately, hubs, it's your own personal decision.

However, if it were me, depending on how bad I need the money (Do I have bills that need paying? Will I have enough afterwards?), I probably wouldn't unless if I really needed it. Takes me forever to grow my hair out, but I recently cut it to eyebrow level because maintenance is a bitch! LOL! That and I had more split ends than Anne Heche's personalities!

  24. I loooove the long on the top, short on the sides look you used rock in the Sean Cody days. Kind of punk rock, and so sexy.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, and...for the record...I LOVED your hair when you flip-flopped with Kevin on Randy Blue! Like, for serious, loved your hair!

  26. I'm of the CUT IT vote. Summer's coming and short hair is cooler, it grows back and the biggest plus -- you could incorporate wigs into your Sally Jesse glasses-wearing repartee.

  27. i totally agree closetcaseblog! that hair was radtastic. =)

  28. While I'm in the camp that aren't the biggest fans of your current hair style, I don't think you should cut it/do this military porn if it's causing you such a dilemma and the pay isn't the best.

    ReplyDelete
  29. It could use a little trim, but to be honest, I think your hair is one of your sexiest assets - and that's saying a lot because there's a lot to choose from. But I think when you have so many cookie cutter looking guys, it adds to your appeal that you have a unique (in the porn world anyway) longer hair look.

    ReplyDelete
  30. FUCK CUTTING YOUR HAIR! Come spend the day with me. lol. But seriously don't cut your hair. It one of those things that sets u apart from every other nameless porn actor out there. I agree that it's one of the sexiest things about u. In my opinion if you cut it you'll loose some of your Colby-ness. so don't cut it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. One more for NOT cutting. I mean, a trim is fine, but buzzing it for a low-paying job? Don't do it.

And if they really wanted you, they'd find a compromise. Like you play some non-military guy in their military-themed porno. Soldiers DO get off the base, ya know...

    ReplyDelete
  32. How much money are we talking for locks of Colby's hair? I think there should be a bid for that to make up for the money he will not be making in his next military movie. After all, don't we all want to see Colby in as many scenes as possible?

    ReplyDelete
  33. confederate pin up boy says don't do it!

    ReplyDelete
  34. although Jeff does give good haircuts (and even better head), I'd stay away from the shears. Your hair is part of your signature, personal style. The very fact that someone else is requesting you cut it- and the idea isn't solely yours- makes me emphatically say NO!
Don't ever change your personal look or personality for anyone else.
This isn't even a boyfriend- its a business deal.
Be a man and keep your locks.

    ReplyDelete
  35. There is no one else like u in porn... I can't find a single guy out there that is remotely like u... U are an original in a very stale world. Please don't cut it....

  36. Amazing how this topic has drawn the most comments.... I say next you put manscaping on the table, and break the million hits mark...lol.

  39. Cut it off monsieur! Wear a blond wig when you need long hair :D

  40. Military cuts are a dime a dozen, your mop makes you stand out (not to mention, connects you with 70's porn and every straight guy with one too many beers in their gut).
That being said, do whatever the hell you want, but don't do it for a measly pay stub.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think you are extremely sexy, but with long hair you Ooze straight up beauty.
Also,iIt shows how much you like yourself with long hair, so there's really nothing to decide.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Keep the Hair, next it will be "shave the beard and while your at it do your legs as well.

So many of us love the 'haired' up look on you, drives me wild all of the time.

Plus small salary, are you kidding!

  43. Unless the scene partner you are to be paired with is one you wanted to work with, and unless cutting your hair won't affect you getting other roles, then I'd say it's wise to keep the hair, especially if it's your personal preference. Cutting your hair if it will affect your future jobs is not worth the crummy amount of money for just one role.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Unless you scene partner is so hot that you'd sacrifice your hair and possibly other acting roles just to take this one on, then I say keep the hair. If you get more gigs with longer hair, and if you prefer it in your personal life, then it's a no-brainer.

  45. It will grow back. It's all good.
