THAR SHE BLOWS: GIANT SPERM WHALE NAMED FOR MOBY DICK

Wow, I couldn't really resist writing about this story. A giant SPERM (he he he) whale that ate at the top of the whale food chain, named (in the latin, of course) for the homosocial Captain Ahab, known for his penetrative pursuits of Moby DICK and saying "Thar she BLOWS!"...which is also a 1968 SEXploitation film of the same name.....too much Colby goodness in these fossil records. ;)

  1. I'm reading Moby Dick right now - sperm whales are amazing creatures.

  2. I like how you did a little research on this entry, Colby. Here are a few things I also found interesting about Moby Dick and its author, Herman Melville: Melville was good friends with contemporary Nathaniel Hawthorne and they wrote many letters back and forth to each other and it was rumored that Melville's affection for Hawthorne went beyond friendship. The book Moby Dick was based on a a true-life story of the sinking of an English ship, the Essex by a sperm whale. Another interesting tidbit: the coffee chain Starbucks was named after the book's character, Starbuck, not for any affinity for coffee but after the name of another of the books' character's Pequod was rejected by one of the co-founders.
