HISTORY OF PORN: RECOLLECTIONS OF BOYS IN THE SAND (BY BERNARD WELT)

As part of our Boys in the Sand week we asked guest contributor, Bernard Welt to share his recollections of seeing Boys in the Sand in theaters in New York.

Boys in the Sand

"Once I realized that Boys in the Sand was released in 1970, it was obvious I couldn’t have seen it during its first run. I was still in high school, and hadn’t been to New York on my own yet, and certainly hadn’t been to a porn theater. But:

I did see it first in a theater, either the one on Christopher St. or the notorious Adonis, or possibly the 55th St. Playhouse, where it premiered, since by the 80s it was a gay porn house. I remember the film seeming extremely obscure (maybe because by that time I was used to the more conventional gay-porn narrative flicks that succeeded it) and not really all that hot—long non-action sequences?--although it has to be said that almost no one in the history of film could project “I need it. I need it bad and I need it now,” like Casey Donovan. I remember a lot of images of guys fumbling around in some kind of foliage and Donovan kind of being dominated by a big black guy. I remember (wrongly) an image of Donovan arising like Venus from the sea in a Speedo—and now that I think of it, is it possible that that much-quoted image of Daniel Craig in his first Bond film is an homage? I remember having a vague sense that the film occupied some middle ground between titillating art film (“Lonesome Cowboys”) and down-and-dirty porn.

And it’s not surprising that I don’t remember this too well, because we went to gay porn houses to have sex, not to watch movies. Sex inspired by scenes in movies, sure. Sometimes you had to wait till the really good part was over, because some hot guy was so into taking care of himself during a good scene, and then you could pounce when the scene was finished and he was all keyed up. (I owe one incredible sexual experience, with a guy I’m sure I never could otherwise have bagged, to an amazing gang-bang scene in Cadinot’s “Les Minets Sauvages.”) For years it seemed to me you really were not getting the full experience from gay porn unless the image of several heads bobbing up and down over other guys’ laps was part of your fiend of vision. (Or for that matter, straight porn, since you were just as likely to score in a straight porn house, and there was just as much cock-sucking going on.) Is watching porn still a group sport?  I don’t specifically recollect what I was doing while more-or-less watching Boys in the Sand (and I probably saw it in theaters several times); I do remember going behind the screen during a showing of Joe Gage’s Heatstroke and getting involved in a maybe 12-man circle jerk/suck while Casey Donovan was getting gang-banged by farmhands in the woods."

  1. Obviously, that should be "field of vision," but I'm going to look for a use for the phrase "fiend of vision."
