CHILLY WILLY
Charm City dropped trou to an inauspicious 13 degrees Fahrenheit today (feels like -1 according to weather.com), but thankfully most of the ice and snow in Baltimore melted away days ago. I'm just one broken coccyx from a canceled trip to sunny Southern California. Lord knows I need all the Vitamin D I can get. Fingers (and vestigial tails) crossed.

ONE BIT, TWO BIT, THREE BIT. . . FOUR?
While I can't say I'm fond of begging my few and impoverished fans to fund yet another Kickstarter, this project, co-sponsored by Cockyboys, deserves your attention. 3-Bits is a hilarious new web-series that stars, among others, genius comedian and performance artist Erin Markey. Markey plays Madison on the series (FULL DISCLOSURE: BSD Minister of Propaganda Karl Marxxx has performed a full jump-rope routine for one of Markey's burlesque reviews in the past). And the lesbians? Well, the lesbians are so fucking fuckable. Is that wrong for me to say?
Cockyboys is teaming up with the producers of 3-Bits to raise enough money to continue the series, with the aim of incorporating several "cocky boys" in the process (moi perhaps?) in both sexual and non-sexual roles. To help the project, I'm donating my time and potential semen (or simply a friendly ear): 5 minutes of one-on-one Colby cam time for a $500 donation, 10 minutes for $1,000. Who knows, maybe this will lead to a lucrative retirement career as a bona fide actor???
A boy can dream. . . starting HERE.
Watch the 3-Bits for yourself HERE.

FLIGHTS OF BEER & FANCY IN THE HUDSON RIVER VALLEY
Minister of Propaganda (and major beer aficionado), Karl Marxxx and Colby Keller escaped up the Hudson River to Beacon, NY this past weekend. While the main thrust of the trip was work for Colby and art for all (Dia Beacon posts to come!), the Big Shoe Diarists got a chance to sample a couple of tasty flights of beer from the local craft beer establishment, The Hop Beacon. Drinking through the draft beer selection from light to dark brought more than a glimmer to bearded Colby's already sparkly eyes.

I SEE PENIS: KARL MARX
No silly!
Not BSD Minister of Propaganda Karl Marxxx, the original 19th century Marx, or at least a superhero rendition of him. I, for one, choose to interpret the comic-book communist above as a "hero" and not a "villain". With a piece of meat that big wouldn't you?
I'd certainly let his "hammer and sickle" tickle my pickle any ole day of the werk week.

A MOUTH FULL OF FLOWERS
"Shocked" might not go far enough to describe my surprise and delight upon opening a package addressed to me and BSD Minister of Propaganda Karl Marxxx. Inside, I discovered the following:
1. "OH HI", HI HO, a folder:
2. A colorful letter:

COLBY DOES MAD LIBS: CANADIAN BACON STYLE!!!
As some of you may know, I'll be in Toronto this weekend for the Fit Primpin' Pride Party. I've been told pre-sales tickets are already gone, but you still might be able to get tickets at the door. Of course, if book stores events are more your style, I'll be doing another event that evening that's a bit less "spanky."
The longest-running gay bookstore in the world, Glad Day Book Shop is hosting a fun event Friday from 6pm to 7pm to celebrate Big Shoe Diaries' Minister of Propaganda, Karl Marks' We're Here We're Queer We're Mad Libs title as well as Toronto's own J. Bone's now infamous Colby Kokigami illustrations. Both items will be available for sale at the bookstore and I'll sign 'em anyway you want.

I had the strangest dream I was talking to BSD Minister of Propaganda Karl Marxxx on the phone but I couldn't hear him, no matter what I tried. I think I may have found my answer.
Thank G-d I didn't get the cordless!

BOOKS FOR BONERS: SECRET HISTORIAN
I received a big package in the post recently. When I opened it, I discovered a well-read (and annotated) copy of Secret Historian. Immediately, I assumed Minister of Propaganda Karl Marxxx must have mailed me his own personal copy. But why? He read the book this past summer on our cross-country road trip to Vancouver. Surely he could just wait to deliver the book in person? When I asked, he promptly denied any involvement. It took a little digging to discover a letter folded inside the book from BSD buddy Blake from Chicky-dicky-dago. . . Illin'-noise.
Bring it yo. Braught.*
Secret Historian tells the fascinating story of Samuel L. Steward (AKA Phil Sparrow, AKA Phil Andros) friend of Gertrude Stein and collaborator of famed sex-researcher Alfred Kinsey. Professor, poet and tattoo artist, Phil became a pioneer of gay porn in the early 1960s. At least I think. . . Can't wait to read more. I've heard good things. Thank you Blake!!!

BEAD. DAZZLE. BOY.
What better way to spend a late Winter day than a group trip to BeDazzled, downing beers and beading bracelets. A full afternoon of boy-bonding naturally led to a more intensified group activity. . .
. . .the formation of our new boy band: Broken Azure Chili Peppers. On bass is Robee E. Cummings, VEE on keys, and Minister of Propaganda, Karl Marxxx on tambourine. . . And of course me, Colby Keller as lead vocalist.

DA BOMB: AURA R.
A hearty porn star shout-out goes to Berlin-based artist Aura Rosenberg who, like the prodigal son of biblical lore, has finally returned to a subject near-and-dear to her heart (and every BSD reader's pants) PORN! Specifically, source material from the "Golden Age" of 1970s costume-drama-obsessed skin flicks-- rich in big tits and raunchy pre-AIDS cum-guzzling aplomb. Aura began working with the subject nearly 25 years ago but took a break to explore an even more controversial subject-- a frequent and potential outcome of sex: children. Outside her work with children, one of Aura's most famous series to date documents the orgasm expression of art world celebrities, though she began her exploration on the topic of porn with a series of paintings on rocks, "The Dialectical Porn Rock".
To see Aura's latest work check out her most recent show at the Martos Gallery in Chelsea, on view until March 30.
To learn more about Aura and her return to porn, read a discussion with her husband John Miller on Bomb Magazine's BOMBLOG.

BIG SHOE INTERVIEW: FAQNP's RAYMOND CHA TALKS WITH KARL MARXXX
If you've ever received a gift from Colby, you've been made to feel special. He has that knack for understanding other people at their core and figuring out just the perfect commodity that will speak to your sense of self, your ability to grow and change and your realization that aren't yet what you could be, but will eventually become. Ok maybe all book gifts do that, but Colby is quite good at it nonetheless. So when I received an issue of FAQNP, I knew before I finished opening the package that it was the perfect gift for me. And it was. . . jam packed with nerdy writing and queer art, I fell in love instantly and was fortunate enough to sit down FAQNP's Raymond Cha to talk a bit about his project.
KARL MARXXX: What is FAQNP?
RAYMOND CHA: FAQNP is a zine made by and for queer nerds and their admirers. The name stands for FAQNP's A Queer Nerd Publication. The first issue was published in the spring of 2010 and comes out about every eight months or so. Themes have included: obsessions, the early internet and personal computing, travel, science fiction + fantasy, and most recently education.
KM: How do you collect submissions for the Zine? And who else works on it?
KM: What distinguishes queer nerds from others in the LGBT community and why is it important to you to draw a distinction?
RC: I take a broad definition of queer nerd, which includes anyone who feels outside the mainstream of queers and nerds. I talk and write about science fiction and comics a lot because I like them. Other contributors share their nerdy take on everything from Walt Whitman to vintage typewriters.
I thought it was interesting that queers and nerds were becoming more common and even celebrated, which I never expected to happen at this speed. Of course, this progress is a great thing overall, however, something was getting lost in the process. That something isn't something I can exactly define. The zine is about recording a slice of the queer community, hopefully in an amusing and thoughtful way.
Friends have questioned how "nerdy" I am, which makes me chuckle. Explaining my obsession with Doctor Who and learning programming languages for fun among many other nerdy pursuits quickly clarifies the answer for them. An ironic aspect of queer culture (especially in New York) is how self segregating it can be in terms of outward appearance, but also in terns of interests. We're lucky to be in New York with such a large community, however it also allows people to interact with only like-minded, similar looking people. The distinction tries to define a space that acknowledges and encourages the diversity among queers and nerds.
KM: Are we in a nerd renaissance?
KM: What is your favorite nerd moment in pop culture?
Actually, now that I think about it, seeing Ian McKellen star as Gandalf in the Lord of Rings films as well as playing Magneto in the X-Men films is near the top of the list in my favorite queer nerd moments in pop culture.
KM: Why should people read FAQNP?
KM: What else should People be reading?
I also have been reading a lot of comics recently, and No Straight Lines is an anthology of queer comics with work covering four decades.
KM: 'Nuff said. So, be as good a gift-giver as Colby and get your besties copies of FAQNP here!!!
